How to Submit a Fly - Background Info

Fishing has been called the contemplative man's sport for six hundred years. The person who first said that, Dame Juliana Berners, was a fly tyer and the patterns she wrote down in the 14th century are still standards in trout fishing. She didn't have a vise or modern materials but she had some good ideas. Flies are ideas. It's the idea, not the materials, that will last. This fly tying forum is about ideas.
Fly tying has history and lineage. There have been many people who have come before us who tied flies and shared what they discovered. They are part of our heritage and deserve credit for what they gave us to build upon. When you submit a fly for publication in this forum, please honor the original idea if your fly is a variation on a theme, or give credit to the original fly and tyer if you are simply using different materials to fashion or enhance the fly to your own specifications.
An old fly tied with new materials and methods is not a new fly, it is an old fly tied in a new way, and should not be renamed without giving credit to the originator. Look to nature for new ideas. The ideas are there in abundance. The ocean is big and the creatures who live there are incredibly interesting. There is much room for growth, insight, and new directions in saltwater fly tying.
