Striper Moon's the website of author, artist, flyfisherman, guide, and lecturer Ken Abrames. Ken's original thinking is rooted in classic design and technique. His vision is expansive and richly detailed, making our world just a little more like home.
What I like to do is share with others what I have learned over the years. I like to fish for striped bass and I like to fish for them as a hunter hunts game. I don't care about blitzes and easy fish. I care about reading the water and what kind of baitfish are around. I care about analyzing a situation and coming up with a strategy that might work and if it doesn't, coming up with another and another. I like fishing the surf with big flies and long rods. I like to fish the water as if it was the most important thing I have ever done. I like to mend because it is by far the most important skill a fly fisherman can acquire both in the surf and in tidal flows. I like to use my time fly fishing - not fly casting - in that way I'm a little old-fashioned.
If you are tired of hearing that in order to catch more and bigger fish you have to cast farther and strip faster or use a faster sinking line and bigger jigs, then perhaps it's time to take a break from that way of fishing and experiment with some older, more refined traditional techniques.
I try to help people become self-sufficient in their ability to see and understand and adapt their fishing to what is right in front of them. I want to share the tools, techniques, and insights necessary for you to be able to fish for stripers anywhere successfully on your own.
