I use all sizes of hook for different size flies. I tend to use larger hooks than are popular. My favrite hook for all around use is a 3/0 and on big flies I like a 4/0 or better. I do use many smaller hooks and I use steel hooks. I don't like S/S hooks at all and not for environmental reasons. They are too heavy for my style of fishing and are soft in small wire sizes and for other reasons. I use fresh water hooks in smaller sizes because they are strong and light and yes they rust and, I don't care. So use hooks that you like and trust and if you hook a big fish on a small hook you can catch him if you relax and you can hook a small fish on a big hook I do it all the time.
