It is something people have been doing for about 80 or more years. Bergman talks about doing it in the first edition of Trout in 1936 as a good technique.
He used the technique to show, "Sparse Grey Hackle,"
the value of using nymphs as an effective way to fish for trout. So it has history and is within the norms of old fashioned traditional trout fishing methods. Nothing new or abnormal about it.
The dry fly was used as an indicator long before there were, "Indicators".
