I think that Bergman's old fashioned wet fly dropper systems are worth looking at and trying. Also I do not like the modern mono's as they are so flimsy and do not seem to resistany wear at all. They are thin but not really leader - in the sense of leading a fly.
I think that .006 is the lightest one needs to go with hard mono on wet flies - like maxima. It is not nymph fishing it is wet fly fishing and it is much a more active way of fishing and very, very, very productive.
Those old wet fly patterns really produce in fact they are amazingly productive when fished with the old wet fly presentations. I like this way of fishing a lot.
