At this time of year the real fishermen come to “my” stream. I don’t own the stream but I know many of its secrets, so I feel possessive of it. The dragonflies hunt, swooping over my garden to eat the flying ants hatching out of the ground and some of the ones they miss feed the trout ; it is like watching trout eating hatching mayflies in the spring. But it is beginning of fall now and in a few weeks the trees will shed their leaves in the stream. It is then difficult to catch fish and I catch leaves then like the dragonflies catch ants, by the handful. In the morning I look out for the fisherman who, dressed in grey, is luminous in the foggy morning. I wonder how the fish don’t see him as he slowly walks the stream . I’m not sure I like him as he is always “catch and kill” and he is the best fisherman here . And even if I miss seeing him in the morning, I find his footprints on the stream bottom . The great blue heron leaves no human print.
