Subject: Lunch on the River

Took a ride down to the Salmon River in Connecticut today from Wethersfield with my 84 yr old dad. We packed a lunch and I said lets go for a ride. He asked where and I answered Salmon River. He was thrilled and said lets go. His fishing days are basically done because of weak legs and bad knees so our intention was more of a sight seeing trip. But just before I pulled out of my driveway I threw my rod and vest in the car. I said "just in case, I'd hate to get there and have fish all around but no rod." I was not even sure there would be enough water to cover the bottom. We arrived and were happy to see a nice flow. It's been many years since our last visit and we have many fond memories of years gone by. We drove the dirt road from the beginning down stream ending up at the handicapped ramp in the fly area. We sat by the river eating our lunch and soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. Not a soul in sight just us and the river. We sat and talked and listened to the river. Once lunch was done I asked "you think there are any fish that survived the summer?" "I'm gonna get my rod and make a few casts." He just smiled. I felt he was thinking, nothing has changed. I got the rod and tossed a San Juan worm upstream off the ramp. 1st cast nothing. 2nd cast the line stops its down stream drift, I lift and say "there's one", as I did in the old days. It was a nice healthy rainbow that we observed and released after a nice battle. Less than 5 casts later I was on again, a smaller bow but just as healthy looking. A short while later the Warden shows up and I ask if the river had be stocked recently and he said "no not till the end of the month, the only fish in the pool are survivors from the spring." I did not land another fish and it did not matter. I had something more precious. One more memory, quite possibly the best one of them all.
