I dont think it was a rant but a dose of reality. It seems that few want to take the time to do much today that is outside their realm of experience.I read stripermoon when it first came out and it was a revelation to me..I still use a shooting head int. now and then but would rather fish the ocean when its moving with a flaoting line than when its dead calm and a shooting head.Even though I cant break the tether to a stripping basket[I can in the river] Im sometimes looked on as abit odd fishing my floating lines here and there.
Kens way you see works well in RI but not down here where our water is dirty :].And then again Ive read where in certain parts of the Cape one must use an int. line to get under the waves which prevent one from remaining tight to ones fly. There are some very good post 94 as Ken calls them fishermen who catch aload of fish on shooting heads int lines and stripping baskets who think thats the only way to flyfish.
Im just back from a trip to the Bahamas where I was guided each day by young Bahamians who have learned their fishing from past generations. If they dont catch their clients some fish theyre back to diving for conch in waters filled with shark and cuda so experimenting can be very dangerous to their health and safety. Thye have been taught away of doing things that works well for guiding visiting fishermen not used to bonefishing but I couldnt help but compare this somewhat narrow but completely understandable way of fishing was similar to the mantra of weighted flies sinking lines and shooting baskets as the only way to sw fly fish.
Limits the borders of the mind.
While Im at it not being able to toss a fly into a heavy wind limits ones ability to fish as much as any of the above does.If you want to throw 40 feet to passing trout thats great but 40-50 ft into a northeastern on oceans edge takes some doing. The foregoing is is mind limiting the latter limits what where and when you can flyfish..I ve never learned to throw mends and curve casts to my saisfaction and have always been on the lookout to pick up some extra feet and have never been to uptight to ask someone for help in doing so..I dont know why some get uptight about advice to do so..
