I can tell you from my experience why I used an 8 wt. line for an 8 wt. rod, that is what I assumed made the most sense; I wasnt afraid of ridicule at all. It wasnt until I put on a 9 wt. line on my 8 wt. rod, by mistake, that I had an aha moment. Then I went to a 10 wt. line, and it worked even better. Then, a year ago, Ken told me to go up again, and son of a gun, it worked.
I think the reason most people go with what is on the label, it because that seems to make the most sense. Especially when your first starting out.
I also used to use 10 foot leaders, that was the length of the first leader I bought. Then, after I read Ray's book, I realized they didnt have to be that long. Now, I'll use leaders as short as six feet (not all the time). Experience and knowledge are powerful tools.
