Hi all, First, I never made it to the canal spey day but thanks for the directions. I had an invite to go up to the Salmon River for steelies so I took it. Anyway, I'm hoping you fellas can help out with some questions I have trying to rig my long rod for overhead casting. I read with interest Simon G's "Understanding Spey Lines" on the RIO website, where he states that less weight is needed for an overhead cast than for a spey cast on the same rod because more line is aerialized during an overhead cast. Makes sense. My question is, how much less weight? I have a Scott 14 foot 9 weight rod. In setting up an overhead rig for this rod, what do I need to shoot for in a shooting head weight, for instance? Given the differences in the standard single hand rod line weight system to the spey line weight system, what weight standard shooting head will properly load a spey rod? 11 wt? 12 wt? Do I need a re-loading grain scale to figure this all out without a lot of trial an error and cutting and splicing? Thanks for any helpful info.
