I have been doing a bit of experimenting with heat-shrink tubing to try and recreate the welded loops that Rio puts in their lines. One thing I quickly discovered is that some flyline cores do not take much heat before they melt! I will continue my trials and report on progress. All of my trials so far have been on Rio T14.

So far I've tried 1/8" polyolefin tube which shrank to just < 50% making a "so so" join. It still needed an adhesive to make a solid non-slip loop. I also tried some of the "dual wall" HST with adhesive liner in the same specs but it turned out to be a lot "clunkier".

I'm going to try 1/8 4:1 pvc next. Probably should have started this since Rio uses a PVC finish on their lines!

I also came across hobbyist hand welding gear for use with plastics but I'm not quite ready for that yet.

Anyone else playing with heat shrink or welded loops?
