Using the 3 to 3.5 x rod length formula, the head plus 15ft tip gives you exactly 42' which is at the upper end of total head length. You won't need the cheater on your 12, but it will come in handy for your next rod,maybe a 13 footer which, I am afraid to say is innevitable:)
Instead of buying a 15ft floating tip, you could probably make one from an old floating flyline and play around with length until you get something you like. Some T14 is also useful for making different length fast sinking tips.
