Hey John, every rod is different as you know, I just doubled checked over at the Rio web site, a 12 ft 7/8 depending on the manufacturer can take 400 to 550 grains, some suggest no cheaters and some suggest a cheater of 2 1/2 feet ? I would try someones 550 and see how it goes , at over $70.00- $140.00 for line and tips I would try before I buy. check out the Rio web site and you'll see how much it varies .Good luck. :-)
