Hi Bill

We have a timeshare at Hanalei and I've fished some of the beaches and reefs but not "really gone after it". There are very few flats to speak of but lots of shallow reef areas that are worth exploring. My guess is the inshore areas get heavilly fished like the rest of the islands.

On unprotected beaches where the surf comes right to the sand, early morning or late evening propspecting could yield some surprises. A very useful reference is "The ultimate Kauai Guidebook" by Andrew Doughty & Harriet Friedman. The fishing info is limited but but detailed descriptions and maps of on all the various beaches and coves is excellent. It also has some great aerial pictures of the beaches highlighting the reef structure which give clues to places to try.

If you fancy an offshore trip I have contact info for a charter captain who is "fly-rod friendly" and he can put you on Mahi Mahi etc.

I've not tried it but the freshwater fishing is supposed to be pretty good on some of the lakes. They have largemouth bass and Peacock Bass and there are trout stocked in one of the streams.
