In response to general questions about bonefishing.
When I first started tying bonefish flies, I probably tied at least a dozen different patterns. Now my two favorite flies are Gotcha's and Simrams, which are very similar to a Gotcha tied with rabbit fur. I do also carry a few Charlies and Clousers. Size should be 4 and 6, with different weight eyes.
It sounds like it's pretty windy down there next month, I would probably take a 9 weight rod and reel combo with weight forward floating line. You can buy bonefish leaders from any of the manufactures, they are typically 9 ft, 8 or 10 lb. Tippet the same.
Starting out, one of the hardest things is sighting the fish, then presenting an accurate cast. Put it in front of them far enough to let the fly sink to the bottom, then strip the fly with short strips to imitate fleeing prey.
Bonefish usually feed up current, your ideal fishing position is facing down current with the sun and wind at your back (good luck contolling this). The fly should always be stripped away from a fish, stripping a fly back towards a bonefish will send them packing, as there are no reports of shrimp suicide on record.
Polarized glasses are a must, amber is best on the flats. You should also have flats wading shoes to protect against coral and rays.
Not to familiar with striper flies other than Deceivers which will not work on bonefish.
Good Luck, hope this is helpful,
Rick
