thank you for your prompt reply. the rod i currently own is a sage LE 8.5 foot 5 weight. it is several years old. i have been told it has quite a bit of backbone. it currently has a brand new 6 weight line on it. perhaps i should get an even higher weighted line. what drove me to want a nine weight was the prospect of casting in the wind and the ability to effectively handle the larger fish without tiring the things to death. is it the heavier line weight which makes the nine or ten weight traditionally castable in higher winds, or is it the flex of the pool cue? perhaps both.
also, if i were to actually end up using the five with a much heavier line on it, i would presumable need a reel capable of holding the necessary amount of line and backing. would putting a larger reel on a lighter rod throw the mechanics off terribly?
i have been rather turned off at the prospect of throwing a heavier rod, as it is the intense bend and close connection to the fish which i have come to relish. but many opinions stated that a nine is necessary, for various reasons. i have gathered that on this site folks stray from such stringent ways of thinking about fly fishing, and general close mindedness, as it were. these facts are part of what draws me to this site. it is easy to find ones mind confined, and i really appreciate those advocating pure experiment, unphased by the potential for "failure". in my opinion failure has become something which is highly frowned upon, and one must not, in any way, fail at what they are doing. it is a sign of incompetence and deserves no respect. so folks only act in ways which secure for themselves "success", these being ways which have previously been proven as "succesful", and progression of thought is not achieved. we are caught in a state of stale "successes". progress be damned if it means i might "fail" while seeking it out. thank you folks for your open minds.
