Subject: natural materials

Have spine. That means they have an energy that is natural.

Man made materials do not have spine.
That means they have and energy more like a like a wet sock than a baitfish.
Small ones work well, large ones suck.
Large flies made purely with an made materials do not look like fish but like limp rags - not baitfish.
They do not mimic the energy of baitfish at all.

Composite flies that use both natural and man made can and often do mimic baitfish because they have the spine that the natural material provide.

Marketing flies is not the same as designing flies that actually work. Success is selling flies not in making flies that work.
If they sell they work as products.

Selling flies is marketing flies and that is not the same as designing flies that work.

It is designing flies that sell and that is not the same thing at all.

Marketing demands designing flies that are: easy to manufacture overseas, can be easily made, cheaply made using man made materials that are uniform and consistent, With fixed labor costs that are based on production skills not tying skills at price points that sell well and promoting these products to sell is the business of fly marketing.

Nothing wrong with that at all but it is not fly design based on fishing, it is based on marketing products (flies) that are promoted at price points for sales alone.

Man made materials fit that scenario perfectly.

Fly design based on catching fish and fly design based on manufacturing flies cheaply and consistently
at a fixed cost is not he same thing at all.

They co-exist but are not the same.

What does this mean?

It means that there is not anything new under the sun. Marketing is not fly design based on problem solving solutions to fishing difficulties.

It is selling flies period regardless of whether they work or not.

Two different fly design reality things entirely.

Follow the money trail to find out if it is a fly that works or a a fly that is being promoted for sales. If there is no connection to money or a manufacturer than...

It may be a fly that is a solution to a fishing problem.

Fly fishing is homespun - not - mass marketing.

I wish that the manufacturers and their celebrity spokespeople would wake up and remember that.
