You can grease the leader OR use much thicker mono to slow down the decent, for example, use a long piece of 40# mono.

In a somewhat related way I read an article by a BASS pro about fishing in coffee-colored lakes in the South. In these conditions he ups his mono to 60#. He says the the thickness of the mono makes just the right amount of disturbance as it moves through the water to attracts fish to notice his offering.
