Fly fishing to me is all about control. It is not about the definition of a fly which I see get brought up time and time again. A tight knot gives me that control that I seek.
To me it is very similar to that whole discussion about the spine in natural materials versus a limp synthetic. A bit of stiffness in the right places can be a good thing and actually give a better illusion of life.
It is about keeping that fly just a hair over the weed or oyster bar without having to need a gadget.
My system is not perfect but it works well for me.
A loop knot is one of those things that I see everyone use but can never get a real good explantion as to why. I have seen lots of flies in the water retrieved and not once seen one dart with lateral movement because of the knot.
I find it interesting that the so called hindging in a loop to loop fly line or leader system is a problem whereas at the fly it is not. That is the one place where I feel it is critical.
