I've had the same problem with bucktails. Some bucktails' fibers when wet break off by the hook eye. These bucktails' fibers have a silky limpness to them. I have had the problem with store bought bucktails and also some after I dyed them. I think the problem arises from overheating the bucktail fibers and destroying the proteins that make it resilient. Perhaps someone with expertise can speak about what damages bucktails in the dying process? Since I have been avoiding these bucktails I haven't had this problem anymore.

I have not had the problem with feathers breaking off along their length. I did have a problem with feathers coming off the fly completely--solved this when I started using wax and tying in stems better.
