upon examination of several bucktails, the fibers do appear to have a flattened shape. they are a bit too small for naked eye examination, but as i spin them between my fingers there is no tubular smoothness to the role. it feels rather like spinning an uneven toothpick. these fibers are also not smooth and straight, but rather wavy and somewhat coarse. i do like their presence in the water though, translucency yet presence without much material.

i also believe that i have been banging my flies into the bottom. the gut i have been fishing has a very steep bank which gets its fair share of misguided flies into its sides.
