Ken,
The "observer" idea is a great one, I've always thought a tournament would be a valuable way to overcome the elitist mentality and would show flyfishermen for what they truly are, great observers of fish, their surroundings and how they react to their surroundings. A tournament would be helpful as true anglers discuss how they adapted to the current conditions and what they did to catch real fish.
In your posts I always see you discussing baitfish, etc. not xyz fly was used to catch the fish. I'll bet in the right condition a well used trout fly from the 30's could outcatch the latest gummy minnow tied with scent enhancing fishaguts with the proper presentation.
