Many of us are using waders on a SOT kayaks and we've had excellent results. Its important what you wear over them. It is a misconception that waders filled with water will sink you. They won't. There isn't any difference in the specific gravity of the water whether it is inside the waders or outside. ESPN2 did a show on this and we've tested it ourselves too. What waders full of water will do is prevent you from getting back on the kayak due to the weight. So what you need to do is keep the water out. This is easily accomplished with a dry top. There are many to choose from but all have clousure systems that keep water out of the waist, wrist and neck. We have done lots of swimming with these setups and we stay dry. Its a versatile system as you can than layer according to the conditions.

Wetsuits, are the other common attire. They've come a long way in recent years. Make sure if you get one that you take into account the wind. Either get a suit that has a wind barrier or wear additional outer clothing for wind. Wind blowing on a wetsuit without either can result in loss of body heat and lead to exposure problems.
