It was only a matter of time, money, and lack of access until I could no longer resist the dark side. I have a sit in, kayak just over 12 feet long. Also it has a built in motor, not an after market trolling motor type of thing, it is built in and it can still cruise through less than a foot of water. I never saw one before so I grabbed it. Three speeds + reverse, steering system too with a little lever you move forward and back. Just needs a trolling motor battery. I will still carry a paddle for safety sake.
Anway, please lay the newbie advice on me, or what Lyle would call "oolies". I described the yak so you know what I am in. I know there are various opinions for sot and sik's and I know they have safety advantages and disadvantages.
Could the veteran yakers lay the basics on me? Safety is my biggest concern, however fishing tips unique to kayaking are welcome as well.
What is the list of "must haves" aboard my yak? It needs a seat, anyone have any advice on cheap seats, and/or installing them? What about using one of the seats you add to a jon boat?
I plan on starting off in esturaries but I don't think I will be able to stay away from big water for very long, I can totally see myself heading out into Plum Island sound or Joppa flats after the first five minutes.
Any and all advice and opinions would be fantastic. I am heading out this week and I am smart enough to realize I am stupid enough to get myself into trouble without some good advice.
