Lots of yak fishing safety info here, http://www.ultimatekayakfishing.com/forums/forums.html and people to fish with. As a group we make it a priority to fish with beginners so that people get a safe introduction and dont spend too much $$ on stuff they dont need.
Mandatory Safety Gear: a PFD that fits right A paddle leash (fishing requires you to let go of your paddle often) audible signaling device, Whistle, horn...
always have a light onboard even if fishing in daylight only. Life happens and the afternoon can turn into the evening...
Thats just the basics I always have on board. Because I fish at night and sometimes by my self I always have a hand held marine radio attached to my PFD along with my whistle and rescue strobe light.
You clothing is safety gear as well. A good rules is "its not if I go in but when I go in" So dress for the temp of the water.
If fishing from a sit in, take a kayaking class and learn how to paddle and right yourself.
Boats are a big problem for us and we are a big problem for boats. I wont go into details but we move slow and are hard to see especially at night, even with lights. See discussions at UKF.
Fish inshore with minimal fishing gear until you figure out how to manage your yak. Trying to round Napatree and flipping with yak full of gear makes for an ugly day.
Be safe and catch lots of fish :)
