a lot depends on what kind of fishing you want to do. When casting a fly and esp. one with any weight to it, wear glasses. When you do go out further into areas where current is less of a problem than wind, I found a small drift sock to be useful. If you are fishing tidal rivers and salt ponds, it is silly, but for more open ocean water and large fresh water lakes as well it can help you cover a lot of water and with a rudder you can steer your drift to some degree. The scary times I have found have not been at night so much as when some fog rolls in. It may seem over the top, but a hand held GPS (size of a cell phone) is really in the realm of safety equipment in my mind, especially because unlike in a power boat due to physical limitations of our bodies not just a general idea that a compass can provide but a direct shortest distance can be key.
