I would strongly encourage everyone to sit, paddle, and fish out of their Kayak several times prior to adding accessories. Remember any hole cut into it is for life. PFD - This is probably the single most important article one can have with them in a Kayak out on the ocean. Buy a good one; it may safe your life; and wear it at all times! Look for comfort, for if you are not comfortable in it, you won’t wear it. I like one with a high back that doesn’t interfere with my seat. The fit has to be proper so it can't be pulled over your head. Put on the PFD and have someone try to pull it over your head. You'd be amazed how easily some of the type III's come off. Straps cinched tightly and size appropriate vests can help prevent this. The Coast Guard requires that you have a noise-making device, like a whistle. Keep this in a pocket on your PFD. I also carry a signaling mirror with the whistle, with a rescue lamp ,as well as a submersible Marine VHF Radio, and an escape knife. Another must have item is a paddle leash - you’ve heard the adage; “up the creek without a paddle”, that’s one piece of equipment you don’t want to become separated from while on the water. Last, but not least - A Float Plan - I start with a nautical chart and preplan my trip. I look for channels, rock piles, ledges, weed lines, and lobster pots (lobstermen know their bottoms). I plan my drifts to coincide with the tides or prevailing winds and currents. This way I can use them to my advantage and not get caught up in fighting the wind or current the whole day. After planning out my trip, I give this information to someone, so they know where I am going and when to expect me back. This way if I am late or missing, authorities know where I intended to go and where to start looking for me. Good Luck and Welcome to the "Dark Side".
