Followed up this trip with another this past Wednesday. Rode the last
of the outgoing tide through the channel at the entrance to Conscience
Bay all the way into Port Jefferson harbor. Gave me a great lay of the
land as far as where the shallow water was and where the deeper holes
are.
Stopped on a beach to rest and rejuvenate (among other things) then
rode the incoming tide back into the bay from the harbor. Trolled
through a school of shad with no strikes. Numerous small blues were
marauding at the entrance to the bay as the tide ripped over the
shallow flats. Trolling in the Kayak was too difficult over this bar so I
found the holes to troll over. A better strategy would have been to
anchor the yak and sight cast to the blues. Most were snapper blues
with an occasional big gulper bass. In bright sun and shallow water
these fish are very spooky, especially in the yak. The bay was loaded
with baitfish and I could schools of bait washing up over the flats at
the entrance to the bay. I suspect this area will heat up when fall
comes.
Also jury rigged an fantastic rod holder. It works great and is easily
accessible just under my left armpit. It does not interfere with paddling
at all. Will see how it performs when a fish hits.
