in the past week or so, i have discovered the wonders of kayak fishing. or rather kayak safaring. the phosphlorescents are still around in my area, and i have found them to reveal the presence of many many many fish, fish which i before would not have known even existed. i would imagine that this is a rather common phenomenon when paddling, but to me it is new and truly magical.
there are fish which are discernably small, and those which are noticably larger than the smaller ones, ones who move with a swagger not present in the skittish flitting about of the small fish. and then there are things in the water which displace great amounts of water, whose tails leave trails brighter and fuller than my paddle and whose girth is great. i want the seemingly large fish to in fact be large, but i can't help but think that perhaps i am creating most of their size in my imagination. oftentimes the girth of a fish can be seen, and i think that there is no arguing with the space between revealing the body of a fish.
so, does anybody have any experience with this sort of thing or thoughts on the matter that they would like to share? i have been trolling flies a bit, topwater as well as streamers, but to no avail. in three or four nights of many hours each, i have recieved one hit on a white snake fly. i think that maybe the large lit up presence that is my kayak may be spooking the fish too much. i try to troll at least 40 feet behind my boat.
thanks.
