I'm glad to hear your having such a good time kayak fishing Pete! Its good that your keeping it simple for now. Your right to be concerned in heavy current and rips its easy to make the wrong move and sploosh! I would recommend getting a rescue knife and attach it to your PFD if you don't already have one. that way when you go in you can get unfouled from you fly line, leashes etc if need be. They are sort of like a divers knife, mine is small, about 2 1/2 blade and pops out of and back into the plastic sheath easily. It locks into the sheath and has a release lever that works with gloves on. It was about $20 at the Kayak Centre in Wickford other places have them as well.
