I agree. SOT is the way to go.

36" width would be a bear to paddle, especially at 8ft. The longer and slimmer the length to width ratio, the smoother and faster it will go. 14 ft is a good trade off for performance and manuverability. Anything under 12 is just a row boat.

You sound like you're a little bigger than the average fellow. So you may need the extra width for comfort, but typically 36" is way overkill in width. I find 28 to 30 inches ideal. It's wider and more stable than you might think. Also, don't forget to account for the weight of all the extra goodies you might bring along for the ride. They add up faster than you might think.

I know I mentioned more info than you asked for, but these are important things to note if you plan on paddling one for any significant amount of time.

I REALLY recommend taking a paddle in one before you purchase anything.
