Just as with trout there are many ways to fish floaters with stripers.
Ever have a day while fishing with nymphs where the fish would only hit a nymph stripped in quickly beneath the surface? Or even a dry fly under the surface for that matter? I have.
The fun for me with floating lines is managing fly movement as well as fly depth. I have had many nights where I couldn't strip a fly in fast enough to get a fish's attention. I would switch over to spinning gear using the same flies as droppers of a plug and crank with a faster retrieve and start to trigger fish. There also have been many nights where any movement of the fly at all left my fly untouched with many active fish present.
One night I remember very well was shared with two friends and a 10.5 ft four weight noodle with a floating line. The only way we were able to trigger fish to hit our flies where to dapple our flies along the surface like you would a team of spiders and wets for trout. The bass would only hit the fly after it changed direction a few times. There were no reactions from dead drifts or strips of any speed. Only 10-20 feet of line out the tip of the rod was needed. The technique that worked was to exagerate our mends picking the entire lenght of fly line and leader out of the water and place it so once it became tight to the fly, the fly would change direction or sometimes even come out of the water with an over zealous mend.
There are many ways to fish with all types of lines and techniques, try not to limit yourself to just a few.
By the way HAVE FUN.
