Mike, A very old method of splicing lines still works, IF THE LINE HAS
A BRAIDED CORE. It was used in the early days of tournament casting
to make custom lines. 1) Strip the finish off 1 to 2 inches of each piece
of line. 2) Use a needle to "unbraid" the 2 core sections. 3) Evenly
divide each core section into a Y . 4) Place the "crotch" of the Ys
together so the arms of each Y embrace the opposite line section. 5)
Starting at the center, use fine fly tying thread (unwaxed is best) and
wrap toward one of the line sections. 6) Wrap in 1/8 inch segments,
leaving a 1/8 inch space. 7) When one side is fully covered and one or
more additional 1/8 wraps is made on the line, wrap back to the
center, filling the spaces previously left blank. 8) Continue the spaced
wraps on the other section of line and back to the center. 9) Whip
finish. 10) Coat with liquid finish of your choice. Cyanoacrylate glues
(crazy glue, zap-a gap, etc.) are not recommended as they do not flex,
will eventually crack, and will probably cause the line to break
eventually. My personal choice is the SA 2 part, polyurethane wader
repair glue called Ultraflex. Working time is very short, once mixed.
This method also makes a very fine end loop. These directions are
based on information found in Jim Quick's book "Trout Fishing and
Trout Flies".
