Ken, I blame the line makers equally for the confusion. They constantly introduce new taper/head length combinations, but continue to label them by the weight of the first 30 feet. As you have so often and so correctly pointed out, it is time to change the system. The multitude of line tapers/head lengths now available has made the current system obsolete. Your idea of labeling the rod with the optimum weight, in grains, that the rod is made to cast, and labeling the line with the total head weight, for matching up, is superb. I know the RIO Outbound series is labeled this way. I realize some casters might still prefer sizes other than the optimum labeled ones, according to their style of casting, but for the average angler, I think it would be a great improvement.
