Kind of like casting in an arc from down stream to out where you want
it. I am not very good at describing casts but what works well for me is
swinging the tip of the rod over my head and out to get the fly from
down stream to straight out in front of me, without needing a lot of
room behind me. Probably some fancy spey name for it, but I don't
know it.

As far as the mending goes a team flies, even on the surface, seems to
anchor in the current better so you can pick up more line to mend over
the back eddy to get a better drag free drift.
