I'll give it my best shot Ken,first off alot of this has been covered on the spey board, going back to oct. of 2004 to Feb. of 2005, Kieth White of Jersey ,England, myself and several others had some good threads concerning this subject. I guess the first thing to remember is there are several ways to put a load on a fly rod, single handers for the most part use the aerial back and forward cast to achieve this through grain weight of the line, more mass more pull so to speak, in spey casting we use the friction of the line on the waters surface to create load in the rod. The fly line will always follow the path of the rod tip, whether it's a 2hander or single, as long as the line is held taught and there is some type of load you can literally whip the fly line in any direction you please, keeping a taught line is key in any type of casting with out it you loose the load on the rod. Spey type casts are performed using the head of the fly line for most single hand applications this will be about 30 ft.,this is all that should be on the waters surface when starting the cast, this is by no means the only length you can fish with ,with practice you will be amazed at the amount of line you can shoot on the forward cast. Well I gutta go to work so I'll post this much now and cover some casts later.:-)
