Subject: hooking fish during a mend

A recent experience led me to a few questions about hooking fish on the fly. I was fishing a piece of water where the fish were holding 20-30ft out perpendicular from where I was standing (geography limited how far up-current I could move) all the way down current form this point 40-50 ft. I could see and here them rising. I started with three flies of different types and managed a couple of inspections so I changed up until I found something they would comit too. At that point I would cast out perpendicular to the flow and began the mending and feeding line process to drop the flies back to different locations. I began to hook fish at the beginning of the swing and through the sweep. During this time I notoiced that I would get fish to rise to the fly during the mends, regularly grabbing the fly, but when I moved to set the hook I couldn't pull enough line back out of the mend to hook the fish in time. The hooks would stick (very sharp by the way) but the fish would shake it off before I had enough time to pull the line in tight. Is there a way to overcome this problem or is it a better solution to position myself so the fly reaches the fish at the start of the swing into the sweep.
