Ken and John have given you some great advice on how to tackle that rip with a floating line and it very well might be the best way to fish it. In fact it probably is but we can talk tips anyway.

A good tip system is a handy thing to have in your arsenal. Most of them have floating tips and changing between different densities is a snap and takes maybe 5 minutes of your time.

First off an intermediate tip will more than likely not be the best thing to fish a rip with. I associate a rip with current greater than 5 knots and that kind if current will turn your intermediate tip into a floater. You will be lucky to get down a couple inches. No real advantage over a floating line. A good strong back mend will get you that depth with a floater. Not that an intermediate tip never has it uses but if getting down in a rip is your goal you will need to go heavier.

You will need to up the grains and density to really get down. Legnths of T14 or LC13 cut to size are where you would want to start. For a line if you are wnating to spend for a new line rio makes a great one called a coldwater versitip that is a great line and comes with an assortment of tips. You can buy lengths of t14 or lc13 and cut them to different lengths.

Finally even with tips fishing is all about angles. As you stated having to cast upstream is a great way to get depth. For really gettting down as far as possible with your chosen tip angles of 90 degrees or more will be required. Throwing in strong upstream mends also anre going to get the most out of your drift. Keeping as mush floting line of the wnater also helps gets the deepest drift possible. To much line on the water will produce more drag which can pull up your tip.

Good luck out there and we look forward to hearing about your results. That area is defintely on my ist to fish one of these days.
