Subject: Finding the right sinking line |

Let's see if I can state this clearly. The scenario is boat fishing and the boat is drifting between 1/2 knot to 1 1/2 knots. The water is 9-12 feet deep. The fish are on the bottom and the drift can last up to 700 feet.
Currently, I use 28' of T-14 in here and when I count to ten then strip I will snag crabs and starfish. So that is too long a count. If I count to 6 and strip I will take fish. They are small fish and I think there are bigger fish there that I am not addressing with this set up.
Furthermore, I think this line sinks too fast and at slower currents doesn't fully swing and as a result the fish don't get a long enough look. I would like to find a sinking shooting head that would get down fast but not so fast that if I don't begin to take up line in 6 seconds that my fly is scraping bottom. I would like the fly to reach 10 or 11 feet and if possible level out with an adjustment now again with tension but basicly drift just above bottom for a longer time.
I have never used a 30' Type 8 shooting head. Would that sink a little slower than straight T-14 but swing and not bottom out during a long drift?
