Subject: Some recent sinking line experiences from a boat |

I have recently put some good time in using an Airflo 35-foot DI7 (Type VII) sinking head on a floating running line from my skiff. It sinks slower than a straight T-14 head and the extra length seems to contribute to the line's longer swing. In the right current, under 2 knots, in water between 10-15 feet a very nice sweep using unweighted flies between 3 and 10 inches can be had with a 50 to 60 foot cast either across or quartered down current. For example, if the water is 12 feet deep and the stripers are in the bottom two feet and the current is 1 knot I will count 12 seconds and then take a strip to get the slack out, then wait 2-3 seconds to make a short strip and will get the hit on that strip or the next one. From that point I will experiment. Another experience I had recently with this head was at last 30 minutes of incoming at the inside corner of an inlet drifting at less than a knot. I was in basicaly 23 feet of water. Made a 55 foot cast across current and waited 27 seconds. Made one strip to get the slack out, waited several seconds, made a short strip and thought I snagged bottom but fish on. I had done the exact drift with the same count without taking a fish and did grab a plant from the bottom so I know I was at the bottom when I took that fish with a very long swing.
It is important to get down rather quickly but not at the expense of a long swing to give the fish a long look that appears natural.
