Your post makes me smile. You are thinking about what is happening down there and using your imagination to picture the swing and the depth and are factoring in drag and presentation.

That is intelligent.
Fishing with sinking lines intelligently is new to salt water fly fishing or so it seems based on what is and has been written.

Cast and strip is about it and the line you buy is supposed to work all by itself. If it doesn't then buy another line then another and another.

Deep swings are very effective but it does take thought and precision to make them effective.

People write about using them who have not taken the time to experiment and learn how to use them in various situations.
I like your post because it shows that you are doing the work that is necessary to use them well.

Angles to the current and sink rates and drag and slipping the fly along on a controlled drift is not easy.

You cannot buy that skill at the fly shop or get it by reading the marketing verbiage written on the box.

Sinking lines are good tools for those who learn and factor in the realities of using them in a skilled manner.

Getting down does not catch fish, getting down with control does. Current is the big force that has to be factored in. Otherwise any fish you catch is happenstance.
