I use it out of the yak in larger tidal rivers and in open bays and on the ocean. I also like to fish beaches while wading. In both cases and most situations I find it casts nicely on the rod it is set up on (9 wt) and I have no issues getting the fly to the fish. (Though sometimes getting the fish to the fly is less successful. ;)
I have also used floaters in these cases but don't typically find the intermediate hinders me that much except when an undercurrent is really ripping along. Then I do switch to either a floater if the fish are near the surface or the water is shallow and a heavier sinker and a short leader if they are near the bottom in deeper water.
Now if I am fishing a smaller river with current from the bank I do like a floater b/c it is easier to mend and easier to pick up and recast. No argument there.
Sometimes I like a much heavier sinking line when I am fishing down deep and fast current or fishing rips from a boat. A wise old fellow taught me how to stack mend and I think it is challenging, fun and effective and very rewarding when you hook a big fish holding deep. I'm sure there may be other ways to do it but I do like this way. There's probably other ways and Maybe I'll learn some and maybe I won't. I plan on continuing to fish until I can't so I probably will learn more ways.
All that said I have never spent a minute with a fly rod in my hand that I wasn't totally satisfied and at peace. Catching fish or just casting. The line selection never changed that. Floating, intermediate or heavy sinking.
