Funny bit of history. There was a big company a line company that came out with a clear intermediate many years back, before salt water fly fishing became popular. It was in the Eighties. That line would not sell. It was like the modern, "indecisives," clear and slippery and felt real good to cast. In fact thay called it the slime line and it died on the shelves and was taken off the market.
It sat in warehouses for years and years and then...
Hoards of brand new salt watter fly fishing people appeared on the beaches and in boats looking to buy stuff to fish with. All of sudden there was a market ofor stuff that hadn't sold in years, stripping baskets, nine foot nine weight rods and all the rest of it exploded out of the doors of shops - The slime line was was re- packaged and re-distributed with a nice picture of a Striper in blue tones and re-named the "Striper," line.
It sold out immediatly.
IT was a marketing slam dunk.
Old timers just shook their heads in disbelief and giggled a little bit. Business is business and there is nothing wrong with business. That slight of hand move was good business.
Fishing itself is different than the fishing business however.
