Sloth, and the fact that I was pounding fish compelled me to
keep the sinking line on. This is a 30' sink tip, and almost all
the fish came with a jigging strip retrieve at the end of the
swing, so the floater may have indeed worked at that point.
The takes were quite subtle, which led me to believe that
they were taking the fly on the drop. Not a real hit, but rather
a pressure on the line, then a strip hookset.

I should also mention that I kkept a #3 shot a foot above the
fly even with the full sink line.
