Headed to the Ocean State on Saturday for a little recon and fishin'. Arrived at a popular breachway around 7pm, but nothing seemed to be happening, and as I had other spots to check out, I moved on.
Next, went to a well-known salt pond that I had never fished. Upon arrival I saw a few swirls near shore, and upon entering the water discovered that worms were out and about, about 1.5-2" long, as well as some very small silversides. Tried casting to some risers, but by the time I figured out I was presenting too deep and had re-rigged with some corkies, the rises and and the fish had moved on.
Off to location #3, another salt pond/estuary. Arrived about 45 minutes before slack. There were a few fish out and about, and every once in a while I'd hear a pop!, but the action wasn't too hot and heavy. I was fishing a squid pattern, and while the fish were very interested in looking at it and following it, I had a ton of refusals before getting a single half-hearted strike. Sadly, I wasn't paying attention to my line, and I missed the fish. Re-rigged with a shrimp/worm/silverside dropper system for outgoing, anticipating a dramatic pickup in the action...
...which never happened. Again, a few fish here and there. I had some interest from the bass while doing some high-stick nymphing, but only look-sees and then refusals. Couldn't buy a strike from any of the fish holding on station, and I never did figure out what they were taking.
A mystery to ponder over a glass of port and a cigar.
