Subject: Re: Bass popping in my sleep

A couple of seasons back I stood on the road bridge at Weakapaug breachway and watched as millions (litteraly, maybe more) of tiny baitfish came pouring out on the outgoing tide. Just off to the side were a bunch of schoolie bass just shy of keeper size. Periodically, one would come up and grab a baitfish and return to their "lie". It reminded me of trout rising in a good hatch. Picking out an individual fish and making a perfect presentation in daylight gives you a fair shot but a "take" is still not guaranteed.

At night, with a lot of fish feeding at the surface, pursuading a Bass to pick an artificial offering out of the many thousands of naturals available is a lot tougher. Bearing in mind most of the naturals are not being eaten. I don't know what the trigger is that caused those Weakapaug Bass to come up and grab a particular baitfish out of the many available? Nor if its the same thing that triggers a Bass to select a particular shrimp (or worm etc.) at night? But I know the feeling and have left frustrated many times.

The nice part is that when you do hook-up its special - even with smaller fish.

If the weather cooperates, I hope to be out myself this Friday night trying to "crack the code"
