Subject: Aquaculture update from Stripers forever. |

Stripers Forever members– this link to our website will direct you to some very interesting information about a breakthrough in striped bass aquaculture. One of the key arguments in favor of striped bass game fish is the availability of aquaculture striped bass. Sales of aquaculture raised stripers already exceed that of wild fish and, unlike wild fish, the supply is infinitely expandable. Since these fish are usually grown in earthen ponds far from the sea, farm raised stripers have none of the negative environmental issues often associated with ocean pen rearing aquaculture.
A negative comment frequently made by commercial fishing advocates is that baitfish from the ocean are processed into feed for these fish. This is partially true although much of the feed is soy based, but now a dramatic breakthrough is taking place. A company called Neptune Industries has developed a fish food based entirely on insects that they grow themselves. More work remains to be done, but the company thinks they'll be ready with a product next year; the potential here is enormous
It is truly fascinating. Consider that the largest trout in places like Labrador subsist on a diet that is almost entirely comprised of insects; there is no reason to expect aquaculture fish raised on a similar diet will be anything but delicious.
Striped bass are far more economically and socially valuable when harvested – or caught and released – by recreational angling than when killed commercially. Our Southwick studies prove that point. The unsustainable commercial catch of wild fish only stands in the way of aquaculture providing a dependable, expandable and healthy source of striped bass.
Let your state fishery director and legislators know that it is time to end commercial striped bass fishing and let aquaculture do its job of providing striped bass for the public.
