Subject: Tiny crabs

Right ow the bass are on tiny crabs in many places.
The crabs are very small. 1/16" to 1/8 ".

This is what is called the crab hatch.

The crabs are about the size of little ticks and look like them only they are round and clear with a amber cast.

The bass do not filter feed on them although many people say that they do. They actually feed on them one at a time.

Size 16 and 18 hooks are about the right size hook to tie these tiny flies on and light rods and leaders are necessary if you want to try this kind of interesting fishing.

Light rods for stripers is not a new thing at all by the way.

A size C line was the most common sized rod to use when I was young and that is a six weight. A size A was an 8 weight. We never used that heavy an outfit nor did I ever see anyone use one that heavy.

Point being that you can easily catch stripers on lighter tackle and land the fish quickly.

The crab hatch lasts for quite a while and it is fun fishing once you key in on it. the flows coming out of salt ponds and inlets are prime and tidal rivers are good also.

IF you see fish finning on the surface or see them "Winking," in the flow . (opening their mouths taking something like nymphing trout) then there is a good chance that they are eating the tiny crabs. A fine mesh net will tell you in short order if they are feeding on the crabs.

I love stripers they are amazing fish.
