Most winter fish are full of shrimp.
Lots of them also Silversides and Alewives. Little alewives that come down from freshwater.

Sand eels are everywhere if you look for them
especially in rivers at this time of the year.

They like cold water.

Grass shrimp come to the surface in winter they are not just on the bottom. Also Sand Shrimp which are a bit bigger are all over the place and they are also on the surface in winter. There are clam worm hatches and Isopod swarms on the new moons just like in summer. The ocean is very much alive in winter and not at all dormant.

The stripers are not lethargic at all and feed at night on or near the surface in current.

You can catch them deep too.

The temperatures in the water column are more uniform this time of the year so the fish can be found anywhere.

I like current as the fish are more easily found when they are feeding in current.

Also the usual mix of crabs and bottom fish are there all year long.

Atlantic Herring are in the bays right now spawning and soon the glass minnows will be everywhere and the squid will come to feed on them.

The first of the Adult Alewives return in February to the rivers and each moon brings a change and new species to the forefront.

Every month has its own dance of life.

It is there to be seen if you go and look.

I like lights on docks in harbors to see what is around.

There are also smelt and whiting and Pollock and big white worms.

Shrimp are always found in the stomachs of winter bass
it is an abundant and easily captured prey.
