I love the time of year when these little guys are all over the place. It is one of the best times of the year for the shore bound angler to cash in on some excellent fishing opportunities. The fishing isn't necessarily easy, but the opportuinity to find bass in places that look and feel fishy is more likely. The bass push right in against the rocks at your feet to find these little guys. They bass seem to reasseemble into larger schools at this point during year as well. Until this time in august, it seems that the bass have broken up and dispersed, coming down with a case of lockjaw (maybe too many rusty hooks :) ). This sometimes even causes the best anglers to strike out several nights in a row, of course they'll never admit that if you ask them :). But as soon as the mullet show, you can be assured that where you find one bass, you are likely to find a lot more.

If you go fishing enough during this time of year it provides you with a great opportunity to pattern bass in a general area. If you pay attention, you can use the prescence of large numbers of fish to work out the subtlties of a certain area that may of not been obvious during the doldrums. By doldrums I mean the time after the large schools of migrating bass disassemble into there summer patterns. You'll find holes and feeding areas you may have overlooked in the past. The fish aren't everywhere, but they are assembled in much larger numbers in the same types of places you'd look for fish all year.

Think about it. Toward the end of July, if your anything like me, you start chomping the bit after 3 or 4 fishless nights and start questioning your ability to find and catch fish. Then, one night, the fish just seem to appear and next thing you know you can't keep them off your plug. Those hard times during the summer months (late July/early august in RI) allow you to really think and concentrate on what you are doing. But, when the bass show on mullet, just when you thought alll was lost, you start catching fish. Lots and large if your really in it.

Don't get me wrong, you can't just go out into arbitrarily selected water and think you'll catch fish during that time of year. But, if you did your homework all summer catching a good fish here and there, the mullet run will offer you a great opportunity. Time to cash in on the patience and attention to detail you have worked on during the previous months.

Can't wait for the mullet, of course we also get the migrating herring, squid, bunker, etc... to deal with first. Trust me, I'm not complaining! I'm ready to hit the ground running.
